On Thursday, July 25, 2024, the symbolic groundbreaking ceremony marked the beginning of the construction of our new organic waste fermentation plant on an area of around 2.2 hectares in the southwest of the landfill site in Büttelborn.
With this modern plant, Abfall-Wirtschafts-Service GmbH (AWS), as the developer and later operator, will be able to process up to 35,000 tons of organic waste per year directly in its own Gross-Gerau district. Currently, around a third of this waste is disposed of in an external plant in Thuringia. Since AWS is relying on a sustainable and future-proof in-house solution, from summer 2026 the entire amount of organic waste will be converted into biogas, electricity and compost directly in Büttelborn. This concept strengthens the region's independence and disposal security.
The compost produced is available to both farmers and private garden owners as eco-fertilizer. The electricity produced from the biogas is used for internal consumption or fed into the power grid together with the electricity generated by the photovoltaic system, which is also part of the plant concept.
